The IRS recently announced the start of IRS Direct Pay, its new web-based system. More than 150,000 taxpayers have paid more than $340 million in taxes through the new IRS Direct Pay system on IRS.gov. The system allows taxpayers to pay their tax bills or make estimated tax payments directly from their checking or savings accounts. The best part is, there are no fees or pre-registration!
The IRS Direct Pay system provides taxpayers with an instant confirmation that their payment has been submitted. The system is available 24 hours per day, seven days per week. In addition, the taxpayers bank account information is not retained in the IRS systems after payments are made.
According to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, “IRS Direct Pay reflects our latest effort to add more online tools to provide additional service options to help taxpayers.” He goes on to state, “IRS Direct Pay simplifies the payment process, and taxpayers can make a payment from the convenience of a home computer.”
Accessing the IRS Direct Pay is simple. Go to the IRS home page, and select “Pay Your Tax Bill.” The system will then walk the taxpayer through five steps:
1. Provide your tax information
2. Verify your identity
3. Enter your payment information
4. Review your tax/payment information
5. Electronically sign and record online confirmation
30-day advance payment scheduling, payment rescheduling or cancellations, and a payment status search are all offered through the IRS Direct Pay system. The IRS plans to eventually include an option for payment confirmation via e-mail, a Spanish version of the system, and a one-time registration with a login and password to allow quick access for returning taxpayers.
